Pumping stations for great installation depths

Scope of application: Wastewater cannot be discharged with a gradient and/or exceptional conditions prevail

A greater installation depth offers several technical advantages: a larger storage capacity ensures significantly longer pumping cycles, reduces the frequency of switching and thus noticeably minimises wear and tear on the pumps. This is of enormous benefit, particularly in continuous operation, with abrasive fluids and when inflow rates fluctuate significantly. The following examples illustrate when the standard product range reaches its limits and bespoke solutions are required to ensure safety wherever water flows.

The challenge of topography

Sometimes the terrain itself requires pumping stations to be installed at great installation depths. Whether in low-lying industrial areas, railway station underpasses or on flat terrain without sufficient natural gradient: the pumping station must be positioned deep enough to ensure that all inlets arrive on a gradient and that backwater is reliably prevented. Tailor-made solutions guarantee a seamless connection to higher-lying collection sewers, even in the most challenging locations.

Great depth of the inlet channel

Does the public sewer run beneath rivers, railway lines or motorways? Are there long collector sewers with a steep gradient? Is the historically developed structure of the sewer network located deep underground? If the public sewer lies very deep, then the pumping station should be designed at the same depth. This is the only way to ensure an unobstructed inlet whilst avoiding the need to construct additional drop structures. In this case, bespoke drainage solutions are the key to an efficient overall system.

Large volumes of water

Large catchment areas and high water volumes are typical of municipal main pumping stations, industrial estates and rainwater pumping stations. To cope with these exceptional pumping capacities, large inlet cross-sections and sufficient storage space in the pump sump are essential. Deep pump shafts and generously dimensioned shaft reservoirs serve here to relieve hydraulic pressure, thereby guaranteeing safe operation. Tailor-made solutions really come into their own when it comes to such specialised designs.

Backflow prevention in accordance with standards

In accordance with DIN EN 12056 and DIN 1986-100, all drainage fixtures situated below the backwater level must be consistently protected against backflow. If this level is particularly high, this necessitates structural measures: The pump sump must be designed and constructed to a correspondingly greater depth. A bespoke drainage solution allows sufficient storage space to be created below the critical backwater level, thereby reliably ensuring the operational safety of the entire system even in the event of severe backwater.

Challenging spatial conditions

On narrow plots, during retrofitting of existing buildings, or when several utilities – such as sewage and drainage – need to be combined, a wide, shallow design is often not feasible. Deep, slender shaft structures are ideal for these challenging space and construction conditions. Custom-made to fit perfectly, they ensure reliable Drainage whilst taking up minimal space.
